The weekly gatherings of God’s people in corporate worship contain regular elements that the Reformers referred to as the Ordinary Means of Grace.

Over the next four weeks, we will walk through these means and discover how what is ordinary becomes radical when God uses it. Titled Radically Ordinary, this series will unpack the Word, Prayer, Baptism, Communion, and Community as the outward means by which Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption all of which are made effective for salvation (Westminster Shorter Catechism Q&A 88).

The image for this series highlights the nature of the ordinary in our lives. In the setting of a living room, between two couches and before the hearth, sits a pile of laundry. What could be more mundane, more familiar, or more constant than laundry? And yet, in that ordinary pile of clothing is a depiction of the Lord’s Supper: bread and wine. God works powerfully through these means and meets us in them, making something profoundly and mysteriously beautiful.

Perhaps you approach God’s means of grace like laundry: something that is always there to be done? Something to check off the list so that you can move on to other, seemingly more important things?

Together, we will reengage with God’s ordinary means and discover that, in his hands, they are actually extraordinary.

God of all good,

I bless thee for the means of grace;

Teach me to see in them thy loving purposes

And the joy and strength of my soul.

Amen

The intent of this image and the resources below is to encourage devotional engagement with the series throughout the week. From Monday through Saturday, we invite you to read, pray, and worship in preparation for our Sunday gathering.
